This study examined the protective effects of Antirrhinum majus L. extract (AME) against ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin damage in human skin fibroblasts. The cell viability of human skin fibroblasts was not altered significantly by AME at concentrations of 0¡300 ¥ìg/mL. The AME treatment inhibited matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 expression and MMP-1 secretion caused by UVB irradiation. Moreover, treatment with AME increased procollagen type 1 C-peptide (PIP) production and expression significantly in human skin fibroblasts irradiated with UVB. These results indicated that AME has protective effects against UVB-irradiated skin damage in human skin fibroblasts through the resulting antioxidant systems and MMP-1 expression. In addition, AME has considerable potential as a cosmetics ingredient with an anti-aging effect.
